A 125-year-old brand, Goodyear doesn’t need any introduction in North America. It produces tires for a range of different vehicles from bicycles, passenger vehicles, aviation, and military to commercial and heavy off-road vehicles. With over 57 tire manufacturing plants spread worldwide, Goodyear rolls out tires in different categories such as all-season, all-terrain, all-weather, winter, UHP, and mud terrain. Among its capable winter tires is the Eagle Ultra Grip GW-3.

Designed for passenger cars, CUVs, SUVs, and light trucks, the Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW-3 offers excellent winter performance thanks to its directional tread pattern with deep grooves that offer superior traction and high-sipe density for multiple biting edges. While V-TRED technology flushes water and slush quickly from the contact patch to resist hydroplaning, the strong shoulder design assures great cornering ability and even wear. An innovative high-performance tread compound ensures you enjoy uninterrupted high-speed driving whether it’s dry, wet, icy, or snowy condition. The presence of the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol further ascertains its exceptional performance in freezing temperatures.

So, does the Goodyear tire offer enough to be thought of as the best winter tire? Let’s find out the answer in this Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW-3 tire review.

Features and Benefits

Winter tires are engineered to offer incredible performance in areas where the temperatures consistently dip below 45 degrees Fahrenheit. The deep and wide grooves with dense sipes ensure you are in total control even on slippery surfaces. The Eagle Ultra Grip GW-3 is indeed among those capable winter tires.

  • Incredible grip and traction: With a unique high-performance tread compound, the tire offers superb grip, traction, and controllability at high speeds on ice and snow. The directional tread pattern with deep grooves and multiple sipes firmly grips the surface so you get exceptional braking and traction throughout your journey in sub-freezing temperature zones. The V-TRED technology clears water and slush to resist aquaplaning.
  • Superior handling and stability: The use of high-blade density creates multiple biting edges that boost grip in ice and snow and deliver excellent responsive handling and stability on dry and wet surfaces. The solid shoulder blocks, too, deliver confident high-speed cornering without losing any traction.
  • Longer service life: The durable rubber compound not only maintains flexibility in freezing temperatures but also ensures excellent wearability. The special silica polymers coupled with a unidirectional tread pattern resist uneven wear and promote even wear. Moreover, the rim protector safeguards the wheel against accidental curb damage.

Pros and Cons

The Goodyear tire carries a lot of positives, but there are a few negatives as well. Let’s have a look at its pros and cons before summing up the Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW-3 review.

SimpleTire’s view on Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW-3 tires

In a nutshell, the Goodyear tire (starting around $192) is an excellent tire option for someone looking for a capable winter tire that offers exceptional grip, traction, stability, and handling in severe winter conditions. However, the absence of a mileage warranty is a setback for buyers and could prove a deal-breaker for some.

It competes with the likes of Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 (starts around $193), Continental VikingContact 7 (starts around $170), and Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 (starts around $176).

Some of the best winter tires I've used. I went from the very expensive Blizzak WS80's to these due to price and now I am on my 2nd set. I used them only for winter driving, but they do handle well in the dry and wet conditions that are normally rare in Michigan winter months. Whether it is snow, ice, slush, or anything in between these tires instill confidence. Even with my 400hp RWD sedan they have loads of takeoff traction and even more stopping traction. The road noise is noticable over the WS80 tires but worth the tradeoff.
